Description

YESS 14 is a European summer school for PhD students in mathematics education, organised in collaboration with ERME (European Researchers in Mathematics Education) and held in Utrecht in August 2026. Participants work closely together on their research, receive feedback from international experts, and engage in intensive peer learning. The event strengthens young researchers’ networks and deepens their theoretical and methodological perspectives.

The Fourteenth YERME Summer School (YESS 14) will take place from 2–7 August 2026 at Utrecht University (The Netherlands). It brings together early career researchers in mathematics education from across Europe for a week of collaborative learning, research discussions, and expert-guided thematic working groups. The programme includes parallel TWG sessions, plenaries, a YERME discussion group, and social activities, all in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Accommodation, meals, and several social events (including night canoeing and a grand opening at De Moestuin) are included in the €635 fee. Applications, including a 500–750 word abstract, are due by 30 January 2026.

Target audience

The ERME Board, YERME, and the Local Organisers are happy to invite early career researchers (PhD students and post-doctoral researchers) in mathematics education who are affiliated in European countries to take part in the Fourteenth YERME Summer School (YESS 14).

Aim of the course

In line with the ERME Manifesto, the aims of the YERME Summer School are to enable early career researchers to:

  •  meet and establish a friendly and cooperative working culture,
  • compare and integrate their backgrounds in mathematics education research within a supportive peer-discussion environment, with guidance from highly qualified experts from various research areas,
  • present their research ideas, theoretical thoughts and reflections, methodological approaches, challenges, and preliminary results, in order to receive constructive feedback (from both peers and experts) on possible developments, different perspectives, and opportunities for collaboration with related research projects and researchers from other countries.

Study load

Accepted participants will be invited to submit an extended paper (1000–1500 words, including references) that presents one of the following:

  1. preliminary results (including essential information about research framework and methodology),
  2. research work in progress (research questions, framework, methodology, aims, etc.), or
  3. c) comprehensive information about their graduate studies and/or research plans.

The full papers of accepted participants must be submitted by 1 June 2026. All papers within a TWG will be circulated among the respective participants for preparation before the Summer School begins.
