Discovering the Dutch: Dutch Culture and Society

This special track explores the question of Dutch identity by placing the history of the Netherlands and Dutch art in a wider European and transatlantic perspective. You will be introduced to the rich cultural traditions which the Netherlands has developed from the Dutch Golden Age to the present day in artistic fields such as painting, literature, poetry and filmmaking. You will also analyse internationally debated issues in Dutch society, past and present. These include traditions of literacy, cosmopolitanism, and tolerance as well as more practical issues, including euthanasia and the internationally renowned drugs policies.

Dutch Culture: History and Art

During this course you will be introduced to the rich cultural traditions developed in the Netherlands from the 17th century to the present day in artistic fields such as painting, literature, poetry and film-making. The question of Dutch identity will be explored by placing the history of the Netherlands and Dutch art in a wider European perspective.

Dutch Art from Van Gogh to Mondrian

Are you curious to learn more about Mesdag’s Seascapes, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Mondrian’s Geometric Compositions or other Dutch masterpieces from this era? Sign up for this course and find out more Dutch art from the 18th and 19th centuries, up to the early decades of modernism. Discover the styles, techniques and approaches modern Dutch artists used in their strive for the elusive ideal of truthfulness, in paintings as well as applied arts. This course takes you out of the classroom and into cities, museums and churches – you will not be able to get closer to the masterpieces themselves!
