Agile Prototype Your Dream

With Agile Prototyping we take you a step further through a short-cyclic trial-and-error make process to get from idea to a fully functional prototype in a shorter time with less costs and less risks. Agile Prototyping is a philosophy that urges you to think with your hands, not with your head.

Description

Prototyping is an important part of product development. A prototype gives the developers and the client the actual feel of a product. This summer course makes you familiar with different digital manufacturing techniques to make a prototype.

The ‘Agile prototype your dream’ course guides you in a two-step process to get from an idea to a fully functional prototype. In the first step (week 1) you will get familiar with various digital manufacturing techniques, such as laser cutting, 3D printing, 3D milling, 3D drawing and programming microcontrollers. You will experience these techniques hands-on by doing and exploring different perspectives. For example, you first learn how the 3D printer works, followed by hacking the printer to make your prototype.

Step two of the process (week 2) is a learning-by-doing Innovation lab, Agile prototyping. With Agile Prototyping we take you through a short-cyclic trial-and-error make process to get from idea to a fully functional prototype in a shorter time with less costs and less risks. You are challenged to bring your own prototyping project and invited to integrate your existing knowledge with new insights. In this week you will use both your left and right brain to work towards a prototype. We will provide you with ‘just-in-time’ information during the phases of Agile prototyping which will result in a fully functional prototype. This will be a whole lot of fun exploring the boundaries of prototyping.

Target audience

The target audience ranges from the bachelor level to the PhD level. There are no specific requirements for knowledge on prototyping. This course provides you with tools and thinking that apply to a bachelor-, master- or PhD-project. The only requirement is that you bring a dream to the course that you want to prototype.

Aim of the course

Our goal is to create an innovation experience that will give you insight in the pressures and demands of the real world. This course is extreme hands-on and deliberately experiential to develop the mind-set, reflexes, agility and resilience one needs in a dynamic world. You will receive intensive coaching from experienced coaches as you apply best practices for product development.

Learning objective:
To provide students with an understanding of Agile Prototyping and give them enough hands-on experience to keep on practicing and expand the making skills.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Use different machines like 3D printers, water jetting, laser cutting, CNC and be able to do some rudimentary programming in Arduino;
  • Explain the role of prototyping in a successful innovation process
  • Understand and apply the Agile Prototyping methodology;
  • Learn to work in a multidisciplinary team with a user-centered approach.

Study load

It is a 2 week learning lab -a non-traditional experiential learning approach-. We will spend many hours on our lab together. Expect full days from 9AM till 6PM (but no homework)!
