This intensive screenwriting course helps you write and improve your own screenplay in a defined period using theory and feedback from the teacher and fellow students.
In this Summerschool we opt dominantly for the WHY- question in all areas to share your story with the world. Stories have always been part of our nature.
Because storytelling as a way to process our daily experiences.
So it’s very natural for most of us to tell (engaging) stories.
You will be given tools to overcome writer's blocks.
Using pitches and discussions, you will discuss your story and/or theme.
You will learn to explore angles from which you can best tell a dramatic story.
You will learn to explore perspectives to get as close as possible to your story.
You will learn to develop credible characters in such a way that their emotional force fields are fully utilized, in order to maintain the emotional involvement of your audience.
We start with research methods with the use of AI as a nowadays tool. We explore different audiovisual narrative forms and research methods by the possibilities and applications of AI. We can think about what AI as a tool can mean for your storytelling, your film, your content, your communication. We will question the use of AI because its ecological footprint and/or because it escapes copyright laws….and/ or so on?
Our mindset:
Don’t worry too much about ‘rules’ (be aware of them and then forget them)
There’s always a way to tell your story
Write what you know and write what you don’t know
In all great films, big or small, there is personality. Someone wrote it and you feel this.
Stand strong in your identity/quirkiness and weave them into your story.
Daily structure
I am inspired by Laurie Hutzler's design process of character types and character traits, which largely form the basis of the daily meetings (Character Mapping & Emotional Toolbox)
Each meeting has a fixed recurring structure, which provides a framework within which endless variation is possible. This structure mainly consists of the following elements, not necessarily in the order below:
Basic equipment:
Bring your own laptop, Your smartphone, Bring a notebook & pen, A printing machine is available on location
Practical information:
Lunches are at location, The University of the Arts Utrecht (incl. Tuition fee)
This course is also for Master students.
Students will learn how to write their screenplay/ story in nowadays context with nowadays tools, such as AI.
During these two weeks there are 9 contact days.
These days include lectures, film fragments, poetry, sound, discussion and feedback sessions (peer-to-peer) about the work-in-progress.
There are two sessions every day, starting with a PowerPoint presentation with audiovisual fragments and texts about a certain aspect of audiovisual storytelling and a session in which assignments are viewed and discussed. In the remaining time, the student is expected to work on the exercises and the final script.
