In the middle of Middelburg, surrounded by shops and the market square, is the former town hall where University College Roosevelt (UCR) has taken up residence. Around 600 students follow a programme in Liberal Arts & Sciences in the academic buildings surrounding the town hall. In the summer, UCR opens its doors for Utrecht Summer School students from all around the world.

Middelburg is located in the south-west of the Netherlands, and is known as the ‘campus by the sea’. The town boasts of  cosy restaurants, a library, a number of  pubs and a bus and train station that is only a 15-minute walk from the student dormitories. Middelburg can be reached in about 2.5 hours with a direct train connection from Schiphol airport.

About the rooms

The campus of University College Roosevelt has four main student dormitories: Bagijnhof, Roggeveen, Bachtensteene and Koestraat. At Bagijnhof, 10 to 16 students live together in one house. Each student has his/her own bedroom but shares the living room, the kitchen and the bathroom.

Though Roggeveen, Bachtensteene and Koestraat residences mainly consist of one person suites, they also have a number of small two-person apartments. Each suite or apartment has a bathroom and a kitchen unit. All locations have laundry facilities and internet (no WiFi). Maximum 15 minutes by foot, the dormitories are near the academic buildings of University College Roosevelt.

If you choose to stay in one of the dormitories, you will be subletting the room from a current UCR student. This means that his/her things will stay in the room, and you can make use of them during your stay for the summer course.

The housing in UCR is not a hotel-quality accommodation. If you prefer to stay in another accommodation, please make use of one of the many hotels or Bed&Breakfasts in and around Middelburg.

In the dormitories’ kitchen you can find everything you need to cook a nice meal and enough space to store some groceries. You should count on spending approximately €15-20 per day on meals, snacks, coffee/tea and/or other refreshments.

Housing procedure

You will be assigned to a room by the UCR Summer School staff. Rooms are assigned to participants who have completed the registration procedure and who have paid for their course. Rooms are given on a first come, first serve basis to those who have settled their payments. You have to pay a deposit for the room: €150 in cash. This will be returned to you when you hand your key back andif the room is judged to be in a similar state as it was when you moved in.

You can pick up the key to your room on the day before the course starts. Key pick up is between 12:00 and 17:00. Do note that it takes about 3 hours by train to get to UCR from Schiphol airport. Contact us at decoloniality@ucr.nl if you wish to check in at another time. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that we can accommodate check-in times other than those stated above.

You have to check out of your room on the day your course ends or the day after. We will inform you of the procedure during check in.
