An important part of morbidity and mortality among children is due to infectious diseases. During this summer course, participants will get a comprehensive overview of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease in children. The challenges brought on by changing epidemiology, and new diagnostic and treatment options will also be discussed. This course is organised by the University Medical Centre Utrecht.

An important part of morbidity and mortality among children is due to infectious diseases. The emergence of new pathogens, increasing antimicrobial resistance, the advent of new diagnostic techniques, but also increased survival of children with conditions that compromise their immune systems, all make combating infectious diseases in children complex and subject to continuous change. In this course you will learn the basics of infectious diseases in children, and you will discuss the challenges that come with the above mentioned changes.

We will address both the microbiological and epidemiological background and new diagnostic techniques of infectious diseases in children, as well as clinical presentation and antibiotic treatment. We will address the prevention of infection through immunisation programmes; the success of which is compromised by imperfect vaccination coverage in large parts of the world. Vaccine hesitancy, maternal vaccination and blunting will be specifically discussed. Furthermore, management of hospital acquired infections will be discussed. Teaching will be through interactive case-based learning and theme-based lectures. Learning will be further optimized by interaction with your multidisciplinary course participants. Upon completion of this course you will have insight into the possibilities and challenges related to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases in children.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and techniques of basic microbiological diagnostic methods;
  • Know the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of certain key infectious diseases/clinical syndromes;
  • Discuss vaccine preventable diseases and the associated problems and challenges;
  • Understand the problems associated with antimicrobial resistance and hospital acquired infections.
