This course will challenge you to understand and to critically assess the role of EU law in responding to the major challenges the EU is currently facing. It will involve discussing issues ranging from the war in Ukraine, to the difficulties in enforcing the rule of law in the Member States and the EU’s response to climate change. A special focus will be dedicated to issues of European Criminal Justice. Participants will be exposed to different teaching methods, including a moot court.
The course is aimed at those interested in the law of the European Union and in understanding its main contemporary issues. It will interest those with a background in law and will also appeal to those with an interest in European politics, public administration, international relations, history and economics. EU responses will be discussed from normative perspectives, such as fundamental rights protection, and from the perspective of their possible future trajectories. This course, furthermore, offers a unique introduction to no less than four LLM programs at Utrecht University: LLM European Law, LLM Law and Tech, LLM Law and Sustainability and LLM European Criminal Justice.
The Utrecht University School of Law has a long and rich tradition in research and education in EU law. It has been one of the first universities to set up a Europa Institute in the Netherlands and today, EU law is firmly embedded in education and in the RENFORCE research center. This offers you the opportunity to engage with distinguished experts in their respective fields.
The course will take place in Utrecht. In case it is not possible to have meetings on campus due to COVID-19, the course will be offered fully online.
Students with a background in law, European studies or international relations and practitioners and policy makers that seek to be updated on contemporary issues of EU law.
